What We're Offering NSU

Faculty Clinicians โ€” Paid Opportunity
NSU Fine Arts faculty lead masterclass tracks on March 26 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. This is a paid clinical engagement and community service credit opportunity.
Student Competitors โ€” APOLLO SPI Measured
NSU music and arts students compete in the Battle of the Arts on March 27. Every performer's index is measured off their own recording โ€” intonation, pulse accuracy, dynamic range, ensemble alignment โ€” producing a permanent Performance Record with an Achievement score, a measured Demand Index, and a stated confidence level. Certified adjudicators remain in the room; their written commentary is preserved as context and never converted into a number.
Recruitment Booth at Networking Lunch
NSU gets a dedicated recruitment booth during the college networking lunch (1PM, March 26). Direct access to hundreds of Title I high school students actively seeking college arts programs.
Co-Brand Visibility
NSU logo appears on all VSOTB marketing materials, stage backdrops, digital programs, press releases, and the Viable Arts platform โ€” reaching a national audience.
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
Formalize NSU as a Founding Institutional Partner with a multi-year MOU covering joint programming, student pipeline, and co-marketing.
HBCU Showcase Spotlight
NSU receives a dedicated HBCU Showcase slot on Competition Day โ€” a premium performance opportunity in front of judges, media, and the public.

How VB-CAF Measurement Works โ€” The APOLLO SPI Model

VB-CAF measures performance off the recording itself. APOLLO SPI is not an opinion engine and not a popularity contest โ€” it is an instrument. Certified human adjudicators remain in the room; their commentary is preserved as context, never converted into a number.

1๏ธโƒฃ Achievement โ€” Measured

Intonation as median cents of deviation. Pulse as mean millisecond deviation across detected attacks. Dynamic range in decibels. Ensembles add per-section attack spread and observed formation spacing.

2๏ธโƒฃ Demand โ€” Measured

Difficulty of the material itself: pitch range, note density, rhythmic subdivision, tempo. For WOODSHED library editions, the authored score data sets the difficulty floor โ€” documented ground truth, not a claim.

3๏ธโƒฃ Confidence โ€” Declared

Any dimension the recording cannot evidence is returned as UNMEASURED, never guessed. Thin signal caps the composite. The system states plainly what it could not measure.

Achievement placed on the scale of measured Demand โ†’
Performance Record + Composite SPI Score + BIAPโ„ข Tier Certification
Every performer receives a permanent record that cites the physical measurement behind every number โ€” a credential they carry for life.
Excluded by design

Audience reaction, crowd volume, and viewer popularity are not scoring inputs. A crowd's enthusiasm measures the room, not the performer. Excluding it is what allows a small program to out-score a large one on identical evidence.

๐ŸŽ“ The Ask

We are asking Norfolk State University's Fine Arts Department to join us as a Founding Institutional Partner of the Virginia Beach Competitive Arts Festival โ€” bringing their faculty, their students, and their legacy to the most important arts event in Hampton Roads history. This is free, this is impactful, and this is permanent legacy.
